#52tagshannemade week 18

Week 18's prompt was English paper-pieced (EPP) hexagons with running stitch.

EPP involves temporarily attaching fabric to shaped pieces of paper to add strength to the shapes to enable the pieces to be stitched together.  The papers are removed once the pieces are stitched together.

Hexagons are a popular shape for this type of patchwork,  but other shapes include diamonds,  squares, triangles etc.

Once I'd finished sewing the hexagons together, I stitched them onto a piece of vintage linen using running stitch, both horizontally and vertically, imitating quilting. I then attached the piece to a tag.

A poem a week

From early in the first lockdown, my Dad started to read me (and my poetry-loving cousins is their weekly Zoom call) one poem each week. I'm not really one for reading poetry as, like my Dad,  I think it should be read out loud, so it's been a long time since I heard any.

During the last couple of months of 2020 and the start of this, my Dad was reading a section of  Longfellow's long poem 'Hiawatha' per week. When this finished and we went back to a separate poem a week, I decided to add each week's poem to my current journal.

These are the pages I've created so far:

Oh to be in England by Robert Browning

To Hope by Thomas Hood

To a Mountain Daisy by Robert Burns

Brenda in the Lane by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

There'll be more soon.

#52tagshannemade week 17

The theme for this week was couching, but Anne also suggested that we looked at the tags made so far and choose a colour you've not used yet. For me, those colours were orange and yellow. I've couched a variety of rolled fabrics using s mixture of threads, and in some cases, beads.
I also couched a scroll of paper, wool, gimp, a paper bead and a sun-shaped jewellery piece.

Back soon.

#52tagshannemade week 16

It took me a while to finish the stitching on this tag as theme was seed stitch and I started with really small ones!

I started with a piece of linen cut from a vintage tea-towel. I then made three Suffolk puffs using fabric from a vintage Liberty pattern handkerchief. I also added 3 flowers cut from a vintage crocheted doily.

I decided to use two DMC variegated threads for the seed stitch as the stripes of the linen gave three separate areas stitch in. The changes in colour of the thread add interest to the large areas of stitching.

The next tag will be quicker to stitch.

#52tagshannemade week 15

The theme of this week was a 'tiny 'scape'. My landscape is an imaginary one. A flower meadow at the front, a fence, distant hills with sheep and a blue sky with white clouds and a full sun.

There was a lot of stitching involved in this week's tag so it took a bit of time.

The next tag is simpler, so it shouldn't take as long.

#100dayproject2021 days 62 - 67

Day 62

A little paperclip notes page marker. These paperclips are a good way to use up fabric scraps. Though, due to their size, they can be a bit fiddly to make. I used chain-stitch to create the letters.

Days 63 - 66
 I
Little buttons with words or hearts. I covered small (between 3cm and 1cm in diameter) old buttons with a variety of fabrics and I then embroidered letters, hearts, or as in the last image, a word. I also added a ring of running stitch or chain-stitch around side of the button.
The buttons in the last image were used on my #52tagshannemade tag for week 14.

Day 67
A little bow. I stitched two small scraps of white cotton together with running stitch in red silk thread. I gathered the centre of the bow using running stitch. For decoration I added a couple of scraps of shattered silk and a bead.

There'll be more about the #100dayproject2021 soon.

#100dayproject2021 days 57 - 61

I made one of these a day, 3 hearts and two squares. I'm going to join them together with some beads to make a hanging.  I added a bit of decoration to each one, with lace, beads and ric rac, before oversewing the edges of each one.

More #100dayproject2021 in my next post.

Numbers theme ATCs

I take part in an ATC swap each month and March's theme was numbers.
This first has a background of a gelli print and then I added an old bingo card, a piece of bookpage from a book on higher mathematics,  an edwardian gentleman, a ticket and a number 33.
The second one, also has a background of a gelli print. On top I added piece of tissue paper that I'd printed numbers on , then a die-cut butterfly and a couple of labels with numbers.

My next post will be about the #100dayproject2021.

#52tagshannemade week 14

Week 14's prompt was treasures reminding you of a favourite place and a pocket for holding them.

My favourite place was Scotland and the lace pocket holds a portion of an acer leaf and a scented geranium leaf. The acer leaf is from a tree in the grounds of the Glengarry Castle Hotel where we stay when we're in Scotland.  The origins of the geranium leaf are the same as I propagated the plant from a leaf of the plant growing at Glengarry.

I've also added wee bunches of moss and sheep's wool that were picked up during walks in Scotland.

I made the two fabric buttons as part of my #100dayproject2021 (day 66) specifically for this tag. I used a mixed of tea-dyed and patterned fabrics for this tag and used the tea-dyed one for the buttons too.

It was fun stitching this tag as it enabled me to think of past Scottish holidays whilst I stitched. Hopefully,  we should be able to add more memories later on this year🤞.

#100dayproject2021 days 52 - 56

Day 52

Two hidden paperclip bookmarks.  The paperclip is attached at the back with just the piece that goes over what you want to attach it too visible.

Days 53 and 54

Four slow-stitched patches. Fabric scraps on a cotton background with simple running stitches. These will be used as decoration on larger pieces.

Day 55
I've nearly used up the Suffolk puffs I made on day 3, so it was time for a new batch. The largest one is about 3cm in diametre.

Day 56
A larger slow-stitched patch, this one also has a focal point of a stamped piece of fabric. This one will be used for a lavender sachet.

#52tagshannemade week 13

The theme this week was layers.

I used a mixture of grey and purple fabrics, along with some lace, beads and sequins to create this tag. I cut strips put of the fabrics and lace, reducing the width of them for each level. I attached them to each other using blanket and running stitches. On the top of the narrowest strip, I added 3 large flower sequins and two small piles of fabric each with a sequin and 3 beads.

#52tagshannemade week 12

The theme for this week was blanket stitch. I used a piece of wool to stitch on and added 3 Suffolk puffs.  I  used the puffs as starting points for curly trails of blanket stitch in variegated silk perle thread. I also blanket stitched around the edge of the fabric in another perle thread.
